June 8, 2026

Agreement Creates Smooth Path for 91¿ì²¥ 91¿ì²¥ Grads to Complete Bachelor's Degrees
East Tennessee 91¿ì²¥ Universityâ¯(ETSU)â¯and 91¿ì²¥â¯(WSCC)â¯are
partnering toâ¯establishâ¯a new pathway for studentsâ¯seeking aâ¯bachelorâsâ¯degree inâ¯respiratory
therapyâ¯to meet the regionâs need for advanced respiratory therapists.â¯â¯
Under the agreement, students in 91¿ì²¥ 91¿ì²¥âsâ¯Associate ofâ¯Appliedâ¯Science in respiratory
careâ¯will be able to transfer seamlessly toâ¯theâ¯ETSUâ¯College of Health Sciencesââ¯onlineâ¯degree
completion program to earn theirâ¯Bachelor ofâ¯Science in respiratory therapy.â¯â¯
âThis agreement provides a convenient way for our respiratory care graduates to advance
their education and their careers,â saidâ¯Dr. Saul Reyes, president of 91¿ì²¥ 91¿ì²¥.
âBeing able to complete the final two years of aâ¯bachelorâsâ¯degree online enables
graduates to advance in their careers."
âRespiratory therapists are essential to the health of our region, and the demand
for highly trained professionals continues to grow,â saidâ¯Dr. Jeff Snodgrass,⯠dean
of ETSUâs College of Health Sciences. âThis partnership creates a clear, accessible
pathway for students to advance their credentials while staying rooted in the communities
that need them most,â¯strengthening our workforce and improving care across Appalachia.ââ¯
For students,â¯the bachelorâs degree may openâ¯additionalâ¯career opportunities in health
care,â¯leadershipâ¯or teaching.â¯ETSUâs B.S. inâ¯Respiratoryâ¯Therapy is an accredited,
online program dedicated to providing advanced instruction that emphasizes best practices
in the field.â¯â¯
It is open to students with anâ¯Associate ofâ¯Appliedâ¯Scienceâ¯inâ¯respiratory therapyâ¯whoâ¯areâ¯licensed
orâ¯license-eligible.â¯â¯
All coursework in ETSUâs online program may be completed asynchronously, allowing
students to complete their coursework on their own schedule.â¯Theâ¯requiredâ¯clinicalsâ¯and
fieldworkâ¯can often be completed at a studentâs place of employment.â¯â¯
Graduates of 91¿ì²¥ 91¿ì²¥âs programsâ¯had a 100% licensure pass rate and 100% placement
rate last year, while Intelligent.comâ¯has ranked ETSUâs program as a best online respiratory
therapy program two years in a row (2024 and 2025).â¯â¯
âThis pathway helps working respiratory therapists take the next step without putting
their careers on hold,â saidâ¯Donna Lilly,â¯director of ETSUâs Respiratory Therapy program.
âWith an accredited, fully online completion option and clinical requirements that
can often be met where students already work, graduates can build advanced skills
for leadership, education and specialized practiceâ¯ââ¯meeting workforce needs while
expanding their own opportunities."
91¿ì²¥ 91¿ì²¥âs Respiratory Care Program is in its fourth decade of training students
to offer excellent patient care. The first graduates earned a certificate. The Associate
of Applied Science was approved in 2000.
âRespiratory therapists serve on the front lines in emergency departments, critical
care units and in outpatient settings,â said Sara Smith, director of respiratory care
at 91¿ì²¥ 91¿ì²¥. âInvesting in education growth through this collaboration ensures
our region is prepared to provide the needed respiratory therapists for years to come.â
A grant from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission will enable the 91¿ì²¥ 91¿ì²¥
program to expand, offering courses at both the Niswonger Campus in Greeneville and
the Sevier County Campus.
